[آيَةُ الْكُرْسِيِّ - الْبَقَرَةُ 255].I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.
Allah—there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth. Who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Footstool extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Magnificent. [Ayat al-Kursi—Al-Baqarah 2:255]

Must someone who wishes to read the Quran begin with ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful,’ even when starting in the middle of a surah? If someone repeats certain surahs three times, must the basmalah be said each time, or is once enough?
The Sunnah for believing men and women is to begin each surah with the basmalah. If a surah is repeated, its basmalah is repeated as well. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, recited a surah, he began it with ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.’ Allah revealed it with each surah, except Surah Bara’ah (At-Tawbah). When Uthman and the Companions compiled the Quran, they paused over whether it formed one surah with Al-Anfal or was separate; they therefore did not write the basmalah between them.
For the other surahs, the reader is prescribed to recite the basmalah and to repeat it when repeating the surah. When beginning in the middle of a surah, saying ‘I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed’ is sufficient. There is no harm in also saying the basmalah, but seeking refuge alone suffices, as Allah says: ‘When you recite the Quran, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.’ [An-Nahl 16:98]
Thus, when starting in the middle of a surah, seeking refuge suffices. When starting at its beginning, say both the isti‘adhah and the basmalah. When repeating it, repeat only the basmalah; the isti‘adhah need not be repeated.
