Evening

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Self-Sufficient, upon whom all depend. He neither begets nor was born, and there is none comparable to Him.
Whoever recites them in the morning and evening will be sufficed against everything: Al-Ikhlas and the two surahs of refuge, Al-Falaq and An-Nas.

Explanation & source

In the morning and evening remembrances, we recite Al-Ikhlas and the two surahs of refuge three times. Should each surah be recited three times separately, or should Al-Ikhlas be read once, then Al-Falaq once, then An-Nas once, and the sequence repeated twice?

We have not found a text that specifies one of these two methods. However, it appears preferable to read the three surahs once and then repeat them together twice. This is supported by the established report about the Prophet’s bedtime remembrance. Each night, when he went to bed, he brought his palms together, blew lightly into them, recited ‘Say: He is Allah, the One,’ ‘Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak,’ and ‘Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,’ then wiped as much of his body as he could with them, beginning with his head, face, and the front of his body. He did this three times. Narrated by Al-Bukhari.

It is also established that he told the poor Emigrants: ‘Glorify Allah, praise Him, and proclaim His greatness thirty-three times after every prayer.’ Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

When Abu Salih, the narrator from Abu Hurayrah, was asked how to say these remembrances, he said: ‘He says: Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest, until each has been said thirty-three times.’ This is reported in the authentic narration from Ibn Salih.

Ibn Hajar considered both methods good and inclined toward saying each remembrance separately. Among the evidence he mentioned was the hadith of Zayd ibn Thabit: ‘We were instructed to glorify Allah thirty-three times after every prayer, praise Him thirty-three times, and proclaim His greatness thirty-four times.’ Al-Hakim narrated it and graded it authentic, and Adh-Dhahabi agreed.

In a hadith in Muslim: ‘Whoever glorifies Allah thirty-three times after every prayer, praises Allah thirty-three times, proclaims Allah’s greatness thirty-three times, then completes one hundred by saying: There is no deity except Allah alone, without partner; His is the dominion and His is all praise, and He has power over all things—his sins will be forgiven, even if they are like the foam of the sea.’

The earlier bedtime hadith appears to indicate reciting the surahs of refuge together and repeating the group three times. As for the tasbih narrations, saying each remembrance separately appears preferable. Whether a person combines or separates them, both appear permissible. The morning and evening recitation of the surahs of refuge is best treated like their recitation at bedtime.
