Among the best and easiest righteous deeds that bring a Muslim close to his Lord, Glorious and Exalted, is remembrance of Him.

Verses and hadiths on the virtue of remembrance and supplication and encouragement to practice them

Many verses and authentic hadiths from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, describe their virtue and encourage them. The following are some examples.

Allah Most High says: ‘The remembrance of Allah is greater.’
‘Glorify Him morning and evening.’
‘Remember Me; I will remember you. Thank Me and do not be ungrateful to Me.’
‘Believers, remember Allah with abundant remembrance.’
‘For men and women who remember Allah abundantly, Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.’
‘Remember your Lord often and glorify Him in the evening and early morning.’
‘Those who remember Allah standing, sitting, and lying on their sides.’
‘When you have completed your rites, remember Allah as you remember your fathers, or with even greater remembrance.’
‘Believers, do not let your wealth or your children distract you from remembering Allah.’
‘Remember your Lord within yourself, humbly and fearfully, without loud speech, morning and evening, and do not be among the heedless.’

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘The example of one who remembers his Lord and one who does not is that of the living and the dead.’

He said: ‘Shall I tell you the best of your deeds, the purest before your Sovereign, the highest in your ranks, better for you than spending gold and silver, and better for you than meeting your enemy and striking their necks while they strike yours?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Remembering Allah Most High.’

He said: ‘Allah Most High says: “I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me within himself, I remember him within Myself. If he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than it. If he draws near to Me a handspan, I draw near to him an arm's length. If he draws near to Me an arm's length, I draw near to him a fathom. If he comes to Me walking, I come to him at speed.”’

He said: ‘Whoever sits in a place without remembering Allah there incurs a loss from Allah, and whoever lies down without remembering Allah there incurs a loss.’

He said: ‘No people sit in a gathering without remembering Allah and sending blessings upon their Prophet except that it is a loss for them. If He wills, He punishes them, and if He wills, He forgives them.’

He said: ‘No people rise from a gathering in which they have not remembered Allah except that it is as though they rise from the carcass of a donkey, and it will be a regret for them.’

The virtues of remembrance, by Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

It drives away Satan, suppresses him, and defeats him.

It pleases the Most Compassionate, Mighty and Majestic.

It removes anxiety and grief from the heart.

It brings the heart joy, happiness, and ease.

It brings provision.

It clothes the person who remembers Allah in dignity, sweetness, and radiance.

It produces love, which is the spirit of Islam, the pivot of religion, and the basis of happiness and salvation. Allah has made a cause for everything and made constant remembrance the cause of love. Whoever wishes to attain Allah's love should remain devoted to remembering Him. Just as study and revision open the door to knowledge, remembrance opens the door to love; it is its greatest avenue and straightest path.

It produces watchfulness until one enters the station of excellence, worshipping Allah as though one sees Him. A person heedless of remembrance cannot reach excellence, just as one who stays seated cannot reach the Sacred House.

It produces turning back to Allah. When a person repeatedly returns to Him through remembrance, his heart returns to Him in every condition. Allah becomes his refuge, shelter, protection, the direction of his heart, and his place of escape during calamities and afflictions.

It produces awe and reverence for the Lord because remembrance takes hold of the heart and keeps it present with Allah. In the heedless person's heart, the veil of awe is thin.

It causes Allah to remember the servant, as He says: ‘Remember Me; I will remember you.’ If remembrance had only this virtue, it would be sufficient honor and excellence. In what is narrated from his Lord, the Prophet said: ‘Whoever remembers Me within himself, I remember him within Myself; whoever remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than it.’ Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

It removes and erases sins, for it is among the greatest good deeds, and good deeds remove bad deeds.

It removes the estrangement between a servant and his Lord. The heedless person has an estrangement from Allah that only remembrance removes.

When a servant comes to know Allah through remembrance in times of ease, Allah knows him in hardship. A report conveys that when an obedient servant who remembers Allah suffers hardship or asks for a need, the angels say: ‘Our Lord, a familiar voice from a familiar servant.’ When a heedless servant who turns away from Allah calls upon Him, the angels say: ‘Our Lord, an unfamiliar voice from an unfamiliar servant.’ In Ibn ‘Abbas's hadith: ‘Know Allah in ease, and He will know you in hardship.’ Narrated by Imam Ahmad.

It saves from Allah's punishment. Mu‘adh, may Allah be pleased with him, said—and it is also narrated as a Prophetic report: ‘No human performs a deed more effective in saving him from Allah's punishment than remembrance of Allah Most High.’ Narrated by Ahmad, Malik, Ibn Majah, and At-Tirmidhi.

It brings tranquility, enveloping mercy, and the angels' presence, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, informed us: ‘No people sit remembering Allah except that angels surround them, mercy envelops them, tranquility descends upon them, and Allah mentions them among those with Him.’ Narrated by Muslim.

It occupies the tongue instead of backbiting, tale-bearing, lying, obscenity, and falsehood. A person must speak; if he does not speak in remembrance of Allah and His commands, he speaks some or all of these forbidden things. Safety from them comes through remembering Allah. Observation and experience testify to this. Whoever trains his tongue to remember Allah protects it from falsehood and idle talk. A tongue dry of Allah's remembrance becomes moist with every false, idle, and obscene word. There is no power and no strength except through Allah.

It protects the servant from regret on the Day of Resurrection. Every gathering in which he does not remember his Lord will be a regret and loss for him that day.

It is the easiest act of worship, yet among the greatest and best. Moving the tongue is the lightest and easiest movement of the limbs. If another limb moved as much as the tongue throughout the day and night, it would be extremely difficult, indeed impossible. In the hadith: ‘Two phrases are light on the tongue, heavy on the scale, and beloved to the Most Compassionate: Glory and praise be to Allah; glory be to Allah the Magnificent.’

It plants the gardens of Paradise. At-Tirmidhi narrates through Abu Az-Zubayr from Jabir that the Prophet said: ‘Whoever says “Glory and praise be to Allah” has a palm tree planted for him in Paradise.’ At-Tirmidhi graded it sound and authentic; Al-Albani authenticated it in Sahih Al-Jami‘, 6429.

The gifts and rewards attached to it are not attached to other deeds in the same way. In the two Sahihs, Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reports that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Whoever says a hundred times in a day, “There is no deity except Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is all praise, and He has power over all things,” receives the equivalent reward of freeing ten slaves; a hundred good deeds are recorded for him; a hundred bad deeds are erased; and it protects him from Satan that day until evening. No one brings something better except someone who does more. Whoever says “Glory and praise be to Allah” a hundred times a day has his sins erased, even if they are like the foam of the sea.’ In Sahih Muslim, Abu Hurayrah reports that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘To say “Glory be to Allah, all praise belongs to Allah, there is no deity except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest” is dearer to me than all upon which the sun rises.’

Constant remembrance of the Lord protects against forgetting Him, which causes a servant's misery in this life and the next. Forgetting Allah causes one to forget oneself and one's interests. He says: ‘Do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient.’ When a servant forgets himself, he neglects his own good and becomes occupied with other things, inevitably leading to ruin and corruption. Whoever forgets Allah is made to forget himself in this world and is left in punishment on the Day of Resurrection. He says: ‘Whoever turns away from My remembrance will have a constrained life, and We will raise him blind on the Day of Resurrection. He will say: “My Lord, why have You raised me blind when I used to see?” He will say: “Thus Our signs came to you, but you forgot them, and thus today you are forgotten.”’ That is, left in punishment, just as you forgot My signs, neither remembering nor acting upon them.

Remembrance is light for the one who practices it in this world, light in his grave, and light on his return, moving ahead of him on the bridge. Nothing illuminates hearts and graves like remembrance of Allah. He says: ‘Is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him a light by which he walks among people like one in darkness from which he cannot emerge?’ The first is the believer illuminated by faith in Allah, love, knowledge, and remembrance of Him. The second is heedless of Allah and turns away from His remembrance and love. All importance and success lie in this light, and all misery in its loss.

Remembrance brings together what is scattered, separates what is joined, brings the distant near, and makes the near distant.

There is hardness in the heart that only remembrance of Allah melts, so the servant should treat his heart's hardness with remembrance. Hammad ibn Zayd narrated from Al-Mu‘alla ibn Ziyad that a man said to Al-Hasan: ‘Abu Sa‘id, I complain to you of a hard heart.’ He replied: ‘Melt it with remembrance.’ The more heedless the heart becomes, the harder it grows. When Allah is remembered, that hardness melts as lead melts in fire. Nothing melts the hardness of hearts like remembrance of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.

Remembrance brings Allah's blessings and the angels' prayers upon the one who practices it. Whoever receives them has attained complete success and victory. Allah says: ‘Believers, remember Allah abundantly and glorify Him morning and evening. It is He who sends blessings upon you, and His angels pray for you, to bring you out of darkness into light. He is ever merciful to the believers.’

Gatherings of remembrance are gatherings of angels. Of worldly gatherings, they attend those in which Allah is remembered. As narrated in the two Sahihs through Al-A‘mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Allah has angels, in addition to those recording people's deeds, who travel the roads seeking people of remembrance. When they find people remembering Allah, they call: “Come to what you seek.” They surround them with their wings up to the lowest heaven. Their Lord asks them, though He knows best: “What do My servants say?” They say: “They glorify You, proclaim Your greatness, and praise You.” He asks: “Have they seen Me?” They say: “No, by Allah, they have not.” He asks: “What if they saw Me?” They say: “They would worship You more intensely, praise and magnify You more, and glorify You more.” He asks: “What do they ask of Me?” They say: “Paradise.” He asks: “Have they seen it?” They say: “No, by Allah, our Lord, they have not.” He asks: “What if they saw it?” They say: “They would be more eager for it, seek it more intensely, and desire it more.” He asks: “From what do they seek protection?” They say: “The Fire.” He asks: “Have they seen it?” They say: “No, by Allah, our Lord, they have not.” He asks: “What if they saw it?” They say: “They would flee from it more intensely and fear it more.” He says: “I call you to witness that I have forgiven them.” One angel says: “Among them is so-and-so, who is not one of them and came only for a need.” He says: “They are companions whose companion will not be wretched.”’ This is their blessing upon themselves and those sitting with them. They have a share in: ‘He made me blessed wherever I may be.’ Thus the believer brings blessing wherever he settles, while the wicked person brings ill fortune wherever he settles. Gatherings of remembrance are gatherings of angels; gatherings of heedlessness are gatherings of devils. Each joins its own kind, and each person goes toward what suits him.

Allah, Mighty and Majestic, boasts of those remembering Him before His angels. Muslim narrates in his Sahih from Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudri: Mu‘awiyah came upon a circle in the mosque and asked: ‘What has brought you together?’ They replied: ‘We sit remembering Allah.’ He said: ‘By Allah, is that your only reason?’ They said: ‘By Allah, that is our only reason.’ He said: ‘I did not ask you to swear because I suspected you. No one of my standing with the Messenger of Allah narrates fewer hadiths from him than I do. The Messenger of Allah came upon a circle of his companions and asked: “What has brought you together?” They replied: “We sit remembering Allah and praising Him for guiding us to Islam and favoring us with you.” He said: “By Allah, is that your only reason?” They said: “By Allah, that is our only reason.” He said: “I did not ask you to swear because I suspected you. Rather, Jibril came and informed me that Allah, Blessed and Exalted, boasts of you before the angels.”’ This divine boasting shows the honor of remembrance before Him, His love for it, and its distinction over other deeds.

All acts of worship were prescribed to establish remembrance of Allah; their purpose is to achieve it. He says: ‘Establish prayer for My remembrance.’

Remembering Allah makes the difficult easy and lightens hardship. Whenever Allah is remembered in difficulty, it eases; in hardship, it becomes manageable; in toil, it lightens; in severity, it passes; and in distress, it brings relief. His remembrance is relief after hardship, ease after difficulty, and release after sorrow and anxiety.

Abundant remembrance protects against hypocrisy, for hypocrites remember Allah little. Allah says of them: ‘They remember Allah only a little.’ Ka‘b said: ‘Whoever remembers Allah abundantly is free of hypocrisy.’ This is why—and Allah knows best—Allah ends Surah Al-Munafiqun with: ‘Believers, do not let your wealth or your children distract you from remembering Allah. Whoever does so—those are the losers.’ It warns against the trial of the hypocrites who neglected Allah's remembrance and fell into hypocrisy.

Hadith
Narrated Aisha: Whenever Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) became ill, he used to recite the Muawidhatan (i.e. the last two surahs of the Qur'an) and blow his breath over himself (after their recitation ) and rubbed his hands over his body. So when he was afflicted with his fatal illness. I started reciting the Muawidhatan and blowing my breath over him as he used to do and then I rubbed the hand of the Prophet (ﷺ) over his body.
