Virtue of Surah Al-Fatihah

Authentic hadiths concerning its virtue

Abu Sa‘id ibn Al-Mu‘alla, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me: ‘Shall I teach you the greatest surah in the Quran before I leave the mosque?’ When he went to leave, I reminded him. He said: ‘“All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds.” It is the seven oft-repeated verses and the magnificent Quran I have been given.’ Al-Bukhari (6/4474); Ahmad (24/15730).

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported: While Jibril sat with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, he heard a creaking above him, raised his head, and said: ‘This is a gate in heaven opened today that has never been opened before today.’ An angel descended through it. Jibril said: ‘This angel has come to earth for the first time today.’ The angel greeted him and said: ‘Receive good news of two lights you have been given that no prophet before you received: the Opening of the Book and the closing verses of Al-Baqarah. You will not recite a letter of them without being granted what it contains.’ Muslim (1/806); An-Nasa’i (2/912).

Ubayy ibn Ka‘b, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Allah has not revealed in the Torah or Gospel anything like the Mother of the Quran. It is the seven oft-repeated verses.’ Allah said: ‘It is divided between Me and My servant, and My servant will have what he asks.’ At-Tirmidhi (5/3125), who authenticated it; An-Nasa’i (2/914).

Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudri reported: On a journey, we stopped and a girl came saying: ‘The chief of our tribe has been stung, and our men are away. Is there a healer among you?’ A man whom we had not known to perform ruqyah went with her, recited over him, and he recovered. The chief ordered thirty sheep for him and gave us milk. When the man returned, we asked: ‘Did you know ruqyah or practice it?’ He said: ‘I recited only the Mother of the Book.’ We said: ‘Do nothing until we ask the Prophet.’ On reaching Madinah, we told him. He said: ‘How did he know it is a ruqyah? Divide the sheep and allot me a share.’

Weak reports concerning Al-Fatihah

Important: These weak reports are included so people know they are weak and do not rely on them.

• ‘Al-Fatihah suffices where no other part of the Quran does. If it were placed in one scale and the Quran in the other, Al-Fatihah would outweigh the Quran sevenfold.’ Very weak—Silsilat Al-Ahadith Ad-Da‘ifah 3996.
• ‘Al-Fatihah is a cure for poison.’ Silsilat Al-Ahadith Ad-Da‘ifah 3997.
• ‘If you lie in bed and recite Al-Fatihah and “Say: He is Allah, the One,” you are safe from everything except death.’ Weak—Da‘if At-Targhib wa At-Tarhib 347.
• ‘No servant recites Al-Fatihah and Ayat al-Kursi in a home whose people are then struck that day by a human or jinn evil eye.’ Weak—Da‘if Al-Jami‘ As-Saghir 3952.
• ‘Al-Fatihah is a cure for every disease.’ Weak—Da‘if Al-Jami‘ As-Saghir 3951.

Virtue of Al-Falaq and An-Nas, the two surahs of refuge

Authentic hadiths concerning their virtue

‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir Al-Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Have you not seen the verses revealed tonight, whose like has never been seen: “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak,” and “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of humankind”?’ Muslim (1/814); Abu Dawud (2/1462).

Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah reported: The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Recite, Jabir.’ I asked: ‘What should I recite, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you?’ He said: ‘Recite Al-Falaq and An-Nas.’ I recited them, and he said: ‘Recite these two; you will not recite anything like them.’ An-Nasa’i (8/5441); Ibn Hibban (3/796). A sound hadith.

‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir said: I met the Messenger of Allah, and he said: ‘‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir, shall I teach you surahs whose like has not been revealed in the Torah, Psalms, Gospel, or Criterion? Let no night pass without reciting them: Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas.’ ‘Uqbah said: No night passed without my reciting them, and rightly I should never abandon them, for the Messenger of Allah commanded me to recite them.
Narrated 'Alqamah bin Al-Muzani: From his father, who said that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "When one of you buys meat, then let him increase its broth. For, if he does not find any meat you'll have broth; and it is one of the two meats." And there are narrations on this topic from Abu Dharr. [Abu 'Eisa said:] This Hadith is Gharib, we do not know of it except through this route, as a narration of Muhammad bin Fada', who is Muhammad bin Fada' Al-Mu'abbar, and he has been criticized by Sulaiman bin Harb. 'Alqamah bin 'Abdullah is the brother of Bakr bin 'Abdullah Al-Muzani.
