Complete Islamic ruqyah from the Quran and Sunnah

Islamic ruqyah is a religious means of treatment and seeking healing. Healing comes from Allah, Glorious and Exalted; no created being independently possesses the power to harm or benefit. Therefore one must turn to Allah rather than any created being.

General guidance to observe during ruqyah

• The reciter must not believe that ruqyah works independently; its effect comes through Allah, Glorious and Exalted.

• Both reciter and recipient should be in a complete state of ritual purity.

• The reciter should face the direction of prayer.

• Both should reflect on the ruqyah texts. The reciter should not utter them without considering their meanings, and the listener should strive to understand them. Both should maintain humility, their hearts attached to Allah's immense power and sincerely seeking His help.

• The reciter may use only Quranic verses or only Prophetic invocations of refuge, though combining them is more complete.

• The reciter may select what suits the available time and the recipient's condition, shorten the recitation accordingly, or recite in stages with rests between them.

• Blow gently with a little saliva during and after recitation; omitting this is also permissible.

• Placing a hand on the forelock or painful area during recitation is considered good, while observing that touching women who are not close unmarriageable relatives is not permissible.

• If the recipient responds to certain verses, they may be repeated three, five, or seven times, according to need and the observed response.

• The reciter should intend to benefit his brother, hoping Allah will heal him and relieve him, and should also seek his guidance. If the reciter is certain of jinn possession, he should seek to free the recipient while also calling the jinn to mindfulness of Allah and upright conduct. This is an important aim, since a Muslim's greatest concern is calling to Allah, as He says: ‘Say: This is my way; I call to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me.’ [Yusuf 12:108] A Muslim is first a caller to Allah, so he should approach ruqyah with these two intentions: healing and a desire for guidance. He should not initially seek to harm the jinn unless the paths to guiding it prove inaccessible. Many possessing jinn have repented through a reciter, and even rebellious devils have embraced Islam through him, so Allah grants healing to the patient and guidance to the jinn.

• Use the wording suitable to the person addressed: ‘I recite ruqyah over myself,’ ‘over you’ to a man or woman, or ‘over you all,’ as appropriate.

• Ruqyah may continue for a week, less, or more, depending on the patient's condition and response, until healing occurs by Allah's permission.

• If the reciter is certain that the recipient is affected by magic—Allah forbid—he should focus on the verses mentioning magic, repeatedly reciting them, particularly the two surahs of refuge. By Allah's permission, this has a strong effect in breaking magic and repelling harm.

• Recitation may be aloud or quiet. Aloud is preferable, in a moderate voice the recipient can hear, increasing their response to and benefit from ruqyah.

Narrated Abu Qatada: that once he was with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (on the way to Mecca). When he had covered some of the way to Mecca, he and some companions of his, who were in the state of lhram. remained behind the Prophet while Abu Qatada himself was not in the state of Ihram. Abu Qatada, seeing an onager rode his horse and asked his companions to hand him a whip, but they refused. He then asked them to hand him his spear, but they refused. Then he took it himself and attacked the onager and killed it. Some of the Companions of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ate of it, but some others refused to eat. When they met Allah's Apostle they asked him about that. He said, "It was meal given to you by Allah."
